Norm

Sadly the dinkum Australian male is often stereotyped as a beer swilling yobbo who spends his days sitting in front of the telly watching the footie while swilling down the odd tinny or ten (generally using his pot belly as somewhere to rest his beer when he is not consuming the amber fluid).  He does not play sport. He is not particularly active.  He has a very poor diet that probably consists largely of hot chips and meat pies.  And to top it off he just isn't that bright.

In the 1970s our government ran an advertising campaign to try and paint the 'normal' Australian as just such a slob (Norm, he was called - and the name became part of our language).  Not much has changed since then.

NOTE: You can learn a lot more about the normal Aussie in The Aussie English CD.
