Making Beer-Cap Bikes with Stewart (2005)

Stewart - Jeweller, Artist and Beer Cap Bike Maker

Q: Stewart - First of all congratulations on the beer cap bikes. They look great, and what a bonzer way to put empties to good use. How did you get started?

A:I started making the basic motorbikes out of the old pull tops when I was living in coober pedy opal mining and making jewellery.

Q: They look quite complex - did you know how to make them from day one?

A: Some guy showed me how to make the basic ones. I am a jeweller and artist so I got a bit carried away one day, changing one particular one into a matchless motorbike - that's the red one with the twin pipes - then I made the blue matchless one.

Q: I would imagine this is very time consuming. Do you enjoy it?

A: It's great fun.

Q: Do you have a favourite beer empty to make them out of?

A: I love Tooheys Old the best because now I can only get old worn ring pulls from parks' barbie areas then put them with Tooheys Old tops. They look great, so generally I only do those ones now and give them to friends.

Q: Exactly what do you make them out of? It's more than the beer cap, obviously.

A: I make the exhausts and engines out of cola can material and the suspensions out of coiled wire.

Q: Do you make a crust out of this? If not, what do you do with them all?

I don't sell them just collect them or give them away as gifts.

Q: How many do you have in your collection?

I haven't that many - about 16, but I'm always looking for flash bottle tops to make an interesting bike.
